Episode #15 – Interview with Yolande De Vries About Boudoir Photography

written by Magdalena Mahdy February 14, 2018

boudoir photography

Helloooo!

in today’s THE AUDACIOUS BABE Podcast episode, I had the absolute pleasure and honour to be interviewing Yolande De Vries from Girls On Film Boudoir and chat with her all about Female Empowerment and Boudoir Photography.

But this is not all. Yolande is sharing how she grew up in Namibia and how her photography journey started. How she evolved from shooting on film just for fun with friends when going out and partying, to when she started to study for her degree in Photojournalism. We then also cover her first dabbles in wedding photography before we dive deep into her boudoir photography side of her business. She gives a tons of really valuable tips on how to get started if you want to start with boudoir photography yourself.

Soooo much goodness in this episode, my lovelies! Go and listen to the full episode now! 🙂 Either here via the website, or via iTunes, Stitcher, iHeart Radio or any other podcasting platform.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I had recording it. She is one hell of an audacious babe, don’t you think?!

If you have any questions for Yolande, she is already part of our online community, so just head over here and join us! I’m sure she is more than happy to answer any of your questions!

Below you will see some examples of Yolande’s beautiful work as well as a few background information PLUS all her social media links where you can find more of her.

Enjoy, my lovelies!

Short Bio:

I’m originally from Namibia (the most beautiful place in the world) and live in Crystal Palace, South East London with my longterm partner Rich.

Up until I finished my BA Photojournalism at UAL I was mainly shooting bands and gigs and my friends, messing around in the darkroom shooting and printing my own films. In 2010 I moved over to digital and I photographed my first paid wedding. I also started shooting events and behind the scenes at London fashion Week, Fashion shoots and videos, Soap & Glory and Not On the High Street to name a few

I remember watching Christa Meola on CreativeLive teaching a boudoir class and I knew that this is exactly what I want to do. We as women are so hard on ourselves and I wanted to make it my mission to show my clients how strong and beautiful they are. I immediately booked a hotel room, found some models and a makeup artist and this is how I started out in boudoir. I find that 5 years later boudoir photography is still a bit stigmatised in the UK, as well as in the photography industry itself – it’ll take some time to become as accepted as it is in the US.

At the moment I still shoot a mixture of all of the above but I specialise in photographing women. At the end of 2016 I started working with mostly female entrepreneurs and creatives, creating beautiful professional portraits, headshots and branding sessions. It is a similar process to shooting boudoir, working one to one with the client, helping grow their confidence, which is what I love.

3-5 fun facts about yourself:

  • The first wedding I ever photographed was a friend who was marrying her sweetheart who happened to be in prison and was handcuffed to a prison officer throughout, even during couple portraits where we had to hide him behind a tree and under the table.
  • In 1993 I saw a UFO in the African night sky. I have 8 witnesses who were there too, so needless to say I’m a believer.
  • I love tequila. Tequila shots, tequila and grapefruit, tequila and tonic water, etc..
  • Fun facts about yourself are hard.
