Episode #19 – Interview with Éadaoin Curtin – Going Full Time

written by Magdalena Mahdy March 21, 2018

Going Full Time

In today’s THE AUDACIOUS BABE Podcast episode, I had the absolute pleasure and honour to be interviewing Éadaoin Curtin from Firechild Photography.

A few weeks ago, Éadaoin was celebrating her first year in her photography business since going full time. What a perfect topic for the podcast – and so I asked her if she’d come on the show. And here we are.

Éadaoin kindly shares her wonderful photography journey and we are chatting all about how it has been since going full time. In the interview, she is sharing some of her struggles, her ups and downs and the challenges she faced in her first year of being full time, BUT also how she came out on the other side stronger than ever. Whoop!

Within this rollercoaster of a year, she has found her true passion in personal branding photography and has never looked back since.

This is a good one, my lovelies!

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I had recording it. She is one hell of an audacious babe, don’t you think?!

If you have any questions for Éadaoin, she is already part of our online community, so just head over here and join us! I’m sure she is more than happy to answer any of your questions!

Below you will see some examples of Éadaoin’s beautiful work as well as a few background information PLUS all her social media links where you can find more of her.

Enjoy, my lovelies!

Short Bio:

Originally from rural Cavan in Ireland’s northeast, I now live with my husband Moe just south of Dublin city. Our beautiful home’s most significant features are the incredible back garden (where I grow tomatoes and raspberries, and dream of keeping bees and a kid goat someday) and the fully soundproofed music studio.

I currently work as a personal branding photographer but have come to that from careers in interior design, teaching and 4 years as a wedding and family photographer. When I realised in 2017 that I could combine my loves of personal branding, on-location shooting, photography and teaching into one dream job I seized the opportunity and haven’t looked back since. Always one to be a slightly square peg and never wanting to fit in, I’ve realised that standing out, and helping small business owners stand out too, is what I was made for (right now…! Hey, I’ve already had 3 completely different ‘proper jobs’!). My biggest joy is when my clients tell me how much their new photographs are impacting their business by giving them the confidence and the platform to share their business and their story – and helping them get more clients. The excitement of people telling me that ‘wow’, they actually like the photographs of themselves always feels so good!

I’ve been full time as a photographer now for just over a year and the biggest thing I’ve learned in that year is about sales. I was really struggling initially because I just didn’t know how to ask people to hire me, or tell them how they could if they were interested. For me, doing something that I can’t help but do, would do for free anyway and is really just a product of my brain processes, it was really hard to see how it was something people would want to buy. But I’ve slowly learned that while my business is for me, but it’s not about me. It’s about my clients, it’s about helping them – and that makes it so much easier for me!

Right now, a year in, the biggest thing I’m learning is about taking care of myself. Taking care of my health and being creative just for me are things I’ve let go to the side – but as I get more efficient with my business, I’m learning to take time for myself and that’s pretty exciting! Rock climbing is my favourite thing to take an afternoon off for and I have dreams of showing my bass guitar some love again soon too!

3-5 fun facts about yourself:

  • After living & working in Vietnam for a year, the only other language I can have a reasonable conversation in is Vietnamese.
  • At 5′ 2″, I always carry a bright yellow (on brand!) step ladder to shoots – but was once a star player on my junior girls’ basketball team!
  • I have the word ‘truth’ tattooed down my spine in Ogham writing (ancient Irish stone engraved alphabet.)
  • My name means ‘little fire’ – which I found out while living in Vietnam because your name must have a meaning there.
  • Shaved my head as a fundraiser at the age of 18 and raised almost €3000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
