In today’s THE AUDACIOUS BABE PODCAST episode I’m chatting about how to deal with negative feedback.
At any point in our lives we can be subject to negative feedback, whether we are a 9-5 employee or whether we are a business owner.
But when we are a business owner and especially when we are creatives who are putting their heart and soul into their work and putting it out there for anyone to judge, we feel extra vulnerable as we identify with our work a lot on a very personal and emotional level.
Receiving negative feedback in those situations can be even more hurtful just because we are reacting emotional towards it. And that is very natural. Don’t get me wrong. It is normal human behaviour. But overall this is all just part of the process. Part of being a creative business owner and part of selling a service.
Once we realise this, the easier it will get to deal with negative feedback from a client. We kind of have to learn to grow a thick skin and try to take a step back from our work.
But remember that they’re criticising your work, not you as a person. Never take negative feedback about your work as a criticism of you as a person!
Yes, we personally identify with our work as we are so emotionally connected to it, as it feels like a part of us, but we must learn to detach ourselves ever so slightly.
It is a learning curve and won’t happen overnight, but it must happen, and it will. If you want to run your business as a business you must also treat your work from that business perspective. You can still be and will always be emotionally connected to your work, that is the whole drive within us to run our business in the first place, but it will get easier over time to take a step back emotionally and disconnect ever so slightly from it.
