Hellooo my lovelies,
Hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. Just thought I’d let you know about the latest THE AUDACIOUS BABE PODCAST episode that just hit the virtual shelves of your podcast app of choice. And this is a good one, I promise.
I’m chatting with the lovely and audacious ladies, Laura & Sarah Wood from Phlock Live – the first all female photography conference in the UK. It is going to take place in March 2020 in Manchester. It is a 3-day conference.
It’s been such a pleasure to have these two wonderful, beautiful people on my show. They share their wonderful journey so far since launching the idea and the brand and how the response in the industry has been truly and overwhelmingly positive.
As much as the line-up of speakers is super diverse so are the topics and the unique way of how each attendee can put together their own schedule to have a wonderful customised experience.
The speakers range from senior industry experts to newbie photography speakers and the topics range from all different industry genres of photography and also photography business talks and session as well as mindfulness and other well-being classes with social evening events as well. It will be a plethora of wonderful things to come.
We all bring something unique to the table, there is enough room for every single one of us.
We also chat all things perception regarding females in the photography industry and why it is so important to bring us all together as women in this industry. Phlock Live will be our voice!
We are really shining a light on what women in photography can do.
It will be an absolute epic event and so much learning and growing as a community will be happening. <3
Listen to the full episode to find out all the exciting bits and pieces of how Phlock Live came about, what Laura & Sarah’s vision is and equally how self doubt and imposter syndrome can sometimes get you wondering…. Can we do this?! YES they CAN…and they WILL!
I can’t wait to see how Phlock Live is growing further over the next few months to come. Such an exciting times we live in, that’s for sure.
Enjoy my lovelies.

Short Bio – Laura Wood:
I live in Yorkshire with my husband Paul and have two little boys named Arthur and Rufus who are my driving force for everything and the reason my photography journey started. We also very recently added a puppy named Frida to our family – we have a noisy but love-filled home! I first started to take photography more seriously when my first son was born. I just wanted to make sure that I captured as many of his milestones as I could and that there were photos to remember the details of our chaotic but beautiful life. I would post my images of my family to social media and people started asking me to photograph their families. It became a business before I had even had a chance to think about it. I mostly photograph families and weddings and go back and forth between documentary and fine art. I love both genres equally and have found a place for both in telling people’s stories.
I also teach online classes and in-person workshops which was kind of the beginning of our journey into the conference idea. I realised that so many of us want to learn and connect with others in the industry and felt certain I wanted to create a community through photography. We decided to host a conference for women in the industry as the most recent research tells us that only 19% of professional photographers are women. We want to change that. We want to inspire, educate and create a community where lifelong connections are made and we all help one another succeed.
Phlock Live will combine all the benefits of a social setting, so delegates from all walks of the industry can connect and build meaningful relationships, but it will also offer a solid learning experience meaning that people leave knowing how to run a better business, to see and create in a new way with the confidence and to recognise that all avenues of photography are open to us.
Fun facts about yourself – Laura Wood:
- Eating pie in a pub on a rainy day is me at my happiest
- I met Princess Diana when I was very little.
- I made it through three stages of application for the TV show The Apprentice. I’m grateful since that I never made it onto the show!
- I worked in fashion for most of my adult life. I still love fashion and try to use styling in some of my images.
Short Bio – Sarah Wood:
I’m a pretty nerdy person so it’s quite difficult to write something interesting about myself when most nights I’m in bed by 8.30 listening to audiobooks and playing word puzzles. Most of my professional life has been occupied by pharmacy, I studied for my Masters degree at Manchester University and then decided I’d not quite had enough of education and went to Cambridge to study for my Masters in Epidemiology.
I worked for a while as an operations manager and a project manager and I’ve had experience of organising conferences and events. When Laura started having a lot of success with workshops and conference appearances, we started talking about how we could work together and Phlock just started making more and more sense. We’ve had an immense amount of fun so far and if I could just do this full time, I would. Although I do love my part time job as a medicines adviser where I get to nerd it up and get paid for it.
I’m also studying for my PhD in pharmacoeopidemiology at Manchester which I hope to finish next year. I used to say it’s not as complicated as it sounds but now I’m not so sure!
Fun facts about yourself – Sarah Wood:
- Me and Laura had a picnic in a wheelie bin when we were little
- My favourite day of the year is Eurovision.
