In today’s short episode on the AUDACIOUS BABE PODCAST I talk about storytelling and how we can use that in our business.
Storytelling describes the social and cultural activity of sharing stories.[…] Communicating by using storytelling techniques can be a more compelling and effective route of delivering information than that of using only dry facts. – Wikipedia
For us photographers there are two different types of storytelling:
- The storytelling in or with our images.
- The storytelling inside our business to be used to connect with our audience i.e. in our marketing & communication
I start the subject with the first type – the storytelling with or inside our photographs. I have found this wonderful article by Sebastian Jacobitz – a streetphotographer from Berlin, who quite expertly describes the complexity of storytelling in our imagery.
He highlights the emotions that storytelling in photography can trigger but also the imagination in people’s minds. There isn’t one universal truth. A picture can mean be interpreted in many ways. But it is through composition that we can guide the viewer or stir them towards something. It is also through composition that we can give the story in our images a clearer start, middle and end points like you would have in traditional storytelling i.e. inside books or movies.
Then I explore the second type of storytelling and that is how we can use storytelling in our business. Why it is so important to use and for what.
As the wonderful Nicoline Huizinga I’ve had the pleasure of meeting at a Women In Business event says:
Sharing a story to make a connection with your audience is powerful, but connecting your story to the inner narrative of your audience will make an impact!
But before you even consider what stories to tell, you need to be clear on why you want to tell the story in the first place – use Sarah Archer’s SPEAK framework.
Listen to the full episode to hear about how you can create a powerful impact and connection with your audience, how to connect your stories to the inner narrative of your audience and how to use the SPEAK framework to align your story with your message.
The episode is live on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher or any other major podcast platform. Or steam right here on the website.
Have a wonderful week, my lovelies.
